We see many unusual problems as well as interesting (or advanced) presentations of ordinary problems. The lack of advanced diagnostic capabilities means we rely heavily on the tried and true history and physical exam. The internet does provide us with the ability to consult specialists quickly, including sending photos, X-rays, EKG's and photo micrographs. Our laboratory is a great asset and can We see many of the "usual" problems encountered in a developing country such as malaria, typhoid, pneumonia, TB, advanced malignancies, complications of pregnancy, etc. We also see things we consider less common (perhaps not uncommon in your area though). These include leprosy, advanced complications of syphilis, filariasis, cysticercosis, trichinosis, various parasitic diseases such as strongyloides, and probably a lot of other things we haven't figured out yet! We must always consider more obscure diagnosis, recognizing the limits of our lab and imaging options. Work is rarely boring! |
